Question – I have heard that the Minnesota Workers Compensation Fee Schedule starting in October 2013 has changed the EMS code used for billing our Chiropractic and PT services from G0283 to 97014. Is this correct, and does this mean I should use 97014 for billing EMS on all claims now?
Answer – Based on information drawn from the Department of Labor and Industry website, update published September 17, 2013, the code now listed for Electric Muscle Stimulation (EMS) is 97014. This Rule, in its entirety, can be viewed via this link: https://www.revisor.mn.gov/rules/?id=5221.4060
This does NOT mean you should begin using 97014 for any types of Chiropractic or Physical Therapy billing other than Workers Compensation cases.
For billing EMS under Chiropractic and/or Physical Therapy services, you should continue to follow the guidelines that are specific to each insurer.
