Coding is one of those topics that I always get questions about. To be quite honest, when I began learning coding, all I could think was, “Ugh! I hate coding and don’t want to learn all of these numbers.”
And now we have ICD-10 coming real soon and we’ll have to learn another bunch of numbers too and it just gets really crazy. But here’s a secret I’ve discovered and it’s the primary thing that will help you code really well. Just don’t make mistakes!
A couple years ago the federal government did a study that determined 83% of all chiropractic claims have errors on them. That means, on average, 8 of the 10 claims you send in are going to have errors on them. It could be a coding error or it could be a hidden error, like a bad birth date or something like that. It’s just going to have an error in it.
That’s not very surprising when you consider that every claim you send has approximately eighty-five data entry points. That in turn, means that you have eighty-five chances to make an error in your claim. But if you concentrate on keeping mistakes off your claims, you will see your coding is going to improve quite a bit and your collection rate will improve as well.
Additionally, the workload on your billing department is going to decrease. The key is to start by concentrating on eliminating errors. Then check in with us, fill out the email form and we’ll keep you updated on specific coding trends and things you can do to improve your coding and collection rate.
